He grew up in the town of Arlington, Virginia, and graduated from George Mason University in 1991 with a degree in industrial design. Savage's first job was as a design engineer at a computer company, but he was never content with working within the confines of the traditional design process. In 1995, he founded the design firm Adam Savage Workshop, which specializes in creating innovative and unusual products, from prosthetic arms and legs to the Adam Savage Eagle, a remote-controlled helicopter that he designed and built.
