Ellen Burstyn is an American actress who has earned a Triple Crown of Acting - an Oscar, an Emmy, and a Tony Award. But she didn't just wake up one morning with these accolades, oh no - Burstyn has worked her way up the ladder of success, one rung at a time. Born Edna Rae Gillooly in Detroit, Michigan, Burstyn left school and began pursuing a career as a dancer and model. It wasn't long before her career began to take off on Broadway, and she soon made her way to the small screen, quickly becoming a household name. In 1971, Burstyn starred in The Last Picture Show, and was the recipient of an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. But it was her role in The Exorcist, released in 1973, that earned her a nomination for Best Actress. And even today, The Exorcist is regarded as one of the greatest horror films of all time. Burstyn's career continued to skyrocket, and she won an Academy Award for her performance in Martin Scorsese's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974). Her other notable roles include Same Time, Next Year (1978), Resurrection (1980), How to Make an American Quilt (1995), and Requiem For a Dream (2000). In the last of these, Burstyn was nominated for an Academy Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award - talk about impressive! In the last decade, Burstyn has appeared in a number of television series, including Political Animals and House of Cards, which have earned her Emmy Award nominations. Not to mention, she has been co-president of the Actors Studio, a drama school in New York City, since 2000. And if that weren't enough, Burstyn was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 2013 - no small feat! It's no wonder that Burstyn has earned such a prestigious reputation in Hollywood - just take one look at her impressive resume and you'll see why. As Burstyn once joked, "I've been lucky enough to have a career that has spanned many years - and so many different hairdos!"
